Ford Motor Company is recalling 549,401 2013-16 Ford Fusion and 2013-14 Ford Escape vehicles in North America, including 36,887 in Canada
Ford Motor Company released a recall on July 18, 2018 for select 2013-16 Ford Fusion and 2013-14 Ford Escape vehicles. The recall involves approximately 549,401 vehicles in North America, including 36,887 in Canada that might have defective shifter cable bushings. The bushing on a vehicle is a type of rubber isolator that provides cushioning and reduces friction between metal parts within a vehicle’s suspension system.
According to Ford’s official statement , the bushing on affected vehicles that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may detach from the transmission. Ineffective bushing that detaches from the transmission may result in the vehicle being in a different gear state from the one selected by the driver. Ford states they are unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this recall, however owners of 2013-16 Ford Fusion or 2013-14 Ford Escape vehicles are advised to use the parking break in addition to putting the gear into park. Otherwise, drivers of affected vehicles risk having their vehicle roll away, as the vehicle might not be in ‘park’ even if the driver put it in the ‘park’ gear.
Owners of the affected Ford vehicles should have been notified by July 30, 2018 and Ford dealers will replace the shifter cable for drivers at no cost. The Ford reference number for this recall is 18S20. If you own a 2013-16 Ford Fusion or 2013-14 Ford Escape, call your local Ford Motor Company dealer immediately to have the shifter cable replaced.
