2013-2016 Honda Accord Recall, Your Next Steps

If you own a Honda Accord with a 2013-2016 model year, here's how to ensure you stay safe on the road

On July 13, Honda Motor Company announced a recall of all 2013-2016 Honda Accords due to insufficiently sealed battery sensors, which can lead to intrusion of moisture. Vehicles with affected 12-volt battery sensors have an increased risk of battery corrosion and eventual shorting, which could lead to smoke or, in worst case, fire heating up through the hood of the vehicle.

Due to four engine compartment fires that have been reported in North America, Honda will be contacting all Honda Accord owners with instructions on how to ensure that the battery in all potentially affected models are sealed properly.

If you own a Honda Accord with a 2013-2016 model year, here are your next steps:

1. Contact your local Honda dealer and notify them that your vehicle has been recalled due to the insufficiently sealed battery sensor

2. The dealership will run a diagnostic test and if not functioning properly, they will replace the battery sensor with a countermeasure part

3. If your car’s sensor is in good condition, the dealership will apply a sealant on the battery sensor case as a temporary fix until the dealership has enough parts in stock

There are over 2 million Honda Accords in North America that may be affected by this recall, and more than 50,000 of these models are in Canada. Honda will be sending out notifications in the mail to car owners by late-July with instructions on how to fix the battery sensor free of charge. In the meantime, to determine if your vehicle will require a repair, call (888) 234-2138.
