What’s the problem?

All of the aforementioned models have the same issue, though the airbags affected in this recall are different from those impacted by previous Takata airbag recalls. The inflators in the airbags in these vehicles may not have been sealed properly, and that may allow too much moisture to seep in.

In the event of a crash, the airbags may not deploy with enough force. Even worse, they might blow apart a metal canister and hurl shrapnel at occupants, increasing the risk of injury beyond the crash itself.

Honda reported one injured driver in Texas and another two incidents in Japan. The latter two cases were observed in a scrap yard, so no occupants were involved. Toyota hasn’t confirmed any reported injuries related to the defect.

What’s the fix?

Honda and Acura will replace the inflator but has also said that the parts required may not be available for another 12 months. Toyota would perform the same repair, though it’s unclear if the timeframe is the same. The repair and replacement will be done free of charge.

What do you do?

Honda, Acura, and Toyota will each notify affected owners by mail starting in mid-March with instructions on the next steps in taking their vehicle to a dealer for repair.
